♥ Jack

Chief was barking at a noise outside, woke Ennis up from a catnap while he was having a full-blown fucking good dream of Jack, and he couldn’t stay in the trailer after that.

They both got in the truck, Chief sitting in the cab these days, having been elevated to friend status in Ennis’s eyes, and drove to the ranch where Ennis got Merlin saddled and Chief found a sun spot to nap in.

Twenty minutes into the ride he was far enough away from reality to finally be able to relax...the feeling of being in the deep woods...the sounds of woodpeckers, of leaves moving in soft breeze, of blue jays screaming far off...all creating the peace he needed...the peace he craved.

Merlin stepped carefully through the stream...the flowing water bringing even more memories to the surface...

Rushing water at the campsite when Jack mentioned the cow and calf...when he brought up moving to Texas...water...flowing......................

The dream of Jack almost canceled out the unwanted thoughts he’d been having of that Jennings guy. For one thing, Ennis had read the whole application, start to finish, and found the bare facts given fairly interesting.

He was an engineer. Obviously, that wasn’t the interesting part. The guy had written an expanded answer to the question why do you want to go on a round up...and he hadn’t said yeehaw once.

Jennings had ancestors who had settled in the West over a hundred years ago, and this answer, for obvious reasons, had captivated Ennis’s attention. He had very little knowledge of his own family’s history in this area.

But it was the very last sentence that fascinated him: I think it will feel like coming home.

He heard and felt the footfalls of Merlin on the hard earth: coming home coming home coming home
