Vernal Equinox 3-20-13

“You ever try to stand one on its end? Ever heard you can do that on the first day a spring?”

“You wanna play with ‘em or eat ‘em...gimme your plate.”

Jack held out the chipped blue enamel plate and Ennis shoveled a pile of scrambled eggs, bacon and fried potatoes dripping with grease onto the mostly clean plate.

“I saw somebody do it once, at a rodeo...stood an egg on one end, first day a spring...that’s the only day in the whole year you can do it...only works on that one day.”

Ennis filled his own plate, tossed a biscuit to Jack, and settled back against a log to enjoy the breakfast he had cooked.

“What’s so special about the first day a spring? Why can’t ya do it any other day? I heard it was just a old wives tale...can’t never do it, stand a egg on its end.”

“Yeah well I saw it with my own eyes...look...”

He took another plate from the pile next to the fire, got up and set the plate on the stump he’d been sitting on.

“Shit, ain’t gonna work on somethin that leans like this stump...I was in a bar when I seen it.”

He looked around for something flat and seeing nothing returned to his seat and picked up his plate.

“Well, I seen i...gotta have a table, somethin flat to show ya.”

It occurred to him then that he would never be able to show him...that they would never be in a place with a table...not a bar, not a restaurant, not a home.

He got to his feet and with all the frustration of that realization he threw the egg as hard as he could, hoping to see it sail into the distance, but his aim was off, it hit a tree not six feet from him, where, if they were to return even years later, the stain of its contents would remain.

Choking back more than feelings he muttered to himself, “Prob’ly just a trick anyway.”

Devastating. That one hit me in the gut.
Jack is in shreds, and Ennis is oblivious.
You convey so much with so few words.

Thinking on this poor egg coming to such a demise and the feelings that go with the fact that our boys would never ever have a normal life to enjoy an egg on its end. Joe

Poor Jack, poor Ennis. Poor egg.

Good story though.

It's at times like this that I wonder
if Ennis really does "get it" and he's
just completely helpless to say or do anything.
