In 1963 when he met Jack Twist, Ennis was engaged to Alma Beers. Both Jack and Ennis claimed to be saving money for a small spread; in Ennis's case that meant a tobacco can with two five-dollar bills inside. That spring, hungry for any job, each had signed up with Farm and Ranch Employment -- they came together on paper as herder and camp tender for the same sheep operation north of Signal.

Friday, and Ennis was looking forward to a slow weekend, beginning with taking the kid riding tomorrow.

After the accident, Ennis bought Ben a pair of cowboy boots, and over the weeks, he had spent time with the kid talking strictly about safety around the barn, both Ben’s and the horses’. They hadn’t done any trail riding, hadn’t even been in the arena...they wouldn’t go out again until Ennis was as sure as he could be that Ben understood his surroundings...understood, as much as a six year old could, that being at the ranch and around the horses demanded his undivided attention to what he doing. And with all that, Ennis still knew that accidents would happen.

He stopped at the bar on his way home, sat at a table in the corner and ordered a burger with fries and a draft, and while waiting for his food to arrive, he made a mental list of all the things coming up in the next few weeks and months that would consume his time, energy, thoughts.

The round up, of course, was the biggest of these, but also mixed in was Meg’s birthday in early April, and a date later that same month that was easily remembered twenty eight years later, one he knew would would remain when all the rest had faded.

I like a lot how, on top of the excellent writing, you manage to find the perfect pictures. Thank you

Well, "a date later that same month that was easily remembered twenty eight years later, one he knew would would remain when all the rest had faded." Ah, the depth of his feelings, only admitted by those important things he remembers.

Thanks again.

I'm happy he is keeping Ben safe as he can and teaching him all about barn life which can be cruel. Thank you for the update. Joe

I wonder what that date was and if Ennis thought of it every year after. Sentimental of him.
