Well, Jack you wouldn't fucking believe it.

Y'know...law ain't everything...and this is only for New York...Wyoming's a long time comin, I expect.

Tell the truth, I don't even like to think about it. I mean, it's nice for them folks n'all...if that's what they wanna do.

People'll still see em different, though. Yeah, yeah, I know, I always look at the dark side...

But they ain't like us, Jack.

You and me was somethin else...kept it to ourselves, it was just you and me and we didn't need anybody else knowin about it...didn't need everybody knowin our business...said that yourself.

If you and me was to see each other today, in New York State, or wherever they're meetin...reckon we'd just miss each other with all that celebrating goin on...

I'm on the border of New York state and I have had so many messages and calls as to when the wedding is? We have been together 16 years. I'm 46 so when I realized I was gay I gave up on ever wanting a wedding and put out of my mind. But, you know what? I think I would get married now if I could. I found myself looking at pictures I took on our yearly trips to the Adirondacks and I love St. Regis lake. I don't need a fancy ball or party or whatever but the more I look at those pictures today and the beautiful lake with the mountains in the background I keep thinking this is where i want to get married just me and Pat along the water with a few intimate friends. Although in my family they would all want to come. All my aunts and uncles and 98 first cousins and their wives,kids and the whole kit and kaboodle. But, if they really want to see it they will have to hike on up to this spot and watch. Maybe we can have some fried chicken and white checkered tablecloths on the picnic tables and just enjoy the peace of this beautiful place. Plus if this had happened two years ago maybe my one friend would not be losing his house now. He and his partner of 38 years restored an old federal house in New York state and lived in it and loved it together. But, the family contested the will and now he is having to sell his home and he is not able to draw on his partners social security or his pension or his health insurance anymore. The one who died was the successful lawyer and his partner had a small boutique in a charming town all these years and now the family won the court case last October and he is being forced to leave his home and pretty much be without the income or money he was used to at the ripe old age of 68 his outlook is not good. But, had this law been done prior he would probably have been able to win this lawsuit. The heck of it is the little money he had he spent fighting in court to try and keep their home. So I'm jumping up and down for joy at this law and I'm hoping that it moves other states and eventually the federal government to pass similar laws. I don't need a church wedding I just want to have my rights protected. Joe

You are so right, Joe! I have never understood why it should make such a difference. So much so, that 2 people can not have the legal right to marry, live their lives together, just because they are gay. New York has taken a good step and now if only the rest of the country will follow, maybe - just maybe - people will stop hating each other simply because they are different. Different isn't bad!! It's just different!!!

This is such a bittersweet thought. How can Ennis imagine himself and Jack in that crowd but not together and not finding each other?

I know there must be lots of older gay men who never dreamed they'd see this possibility in their lifetime. Whenever there's a big step forward, I always wonder about Ennis and what he would be thinking.

I have no use at all for marriages (except to prevent disasters like what happened to Joe's friend), but I'm all for everybody being able to marry whoever they want if the counterpart agrees.
I only hope it's catching everywhere soon.
