It was unseasonably hot for June, heat shimmered in waves above the pavement.

He stood across the street from the crowd, content to be on the periphery...an unobserved observer.

He'd felt drawn to be there...it was history, after all...but not to be part of the happy, jostling revelers...in fact, stayed only minutes before turning and walking back to his life.

As he made his way back to more familiar territory, flashes of his life came suddenly...his graduation day, first teaching assignment, birth of his daughters, the face of his wife.

They'd been married for 34 years...then one day he acknowledged the fact that he didn't know the person who slept in the bed next to him...the divorce was amicable. Had she known? He wasn't sure...perhaps she guessed, but he doubted it...more likely she felt they just “grew apart”...lots of her friends grew apart from their husbands.

As he stopped at a corner and waited for the light to change, he noticed a white building with a large green awning...an unusual sight. The cornerstone dated the building at 1939. He looked through the window, then turned and walked in.

The interior was cool and dim...not air conditioned cool, but comfortable...3 ceiling fans whirred slowly above, stirring the air.

It was an old fashioned drugstore, the kind with a soda fountain, and round backless stools that spun around, covered with red fake leather and sided with 6 inches of shiny chrome. The counter was black marble with white veining, and napkin dispensers...at one end big apothecary jars filled with red whips and jawbreakers, at the other, a covered pedestal stand with pastries on waxed paper.

Behind the fountain were 3 taps for the most popular sodas, and opposite, metal containers stood, filled with everything needed for banana splits or milk shakes, or malteds, and a mirrored backbar, where you could sit and stare at yourself, or what was behind you, if that was more comfortable.

He ordered a Coke and the kid behind the counter slid a white paper coaster in front of him, it had scalloped edges and the name of the drugstore, Ronnie's, in red letters in fancy script.

His drink came in a trademark glass, heaped with ice and already sweating in the heat...he drank...the icy fizz burning his throat, not quite quenching his thirst.

A man walked in and right up to him.

“Hey.”

He put his glass down and looked up.

“You dropped this.”

In the man's hand was a wallet, his wallet, a flat billfold that, if one were to look inside, contained a drivers license, credit card, a picture of his daughters taken at Christmas 4 years ago, a five, some ones.

“Oh...thanks.” He patted his pocket, “Didn't even notice it was gone.”

The man held out his hand, “Jack Twist.”

“Ennis.”

“Your folks just stop..........”
