Leaving
The fire was going, coffee done, eggs and potatoes in the pan, ready to turn.
“Why don't we stay a couple more days.”
Ennis flipped the eggs, moved the potatoes around, and waited for Jack to answer.
“Supposed to leave tomorrow...what about your job? Ain't you gonna have to be back on time?”
“Quit.”
“Why'd you quit?”
“You talk too much...gimme your plate.” He shoveled the food onto Jack's plate and handed it back.
“Ennis, why'd you quit your job?”
Ennis picked up his cup of coffee, drank some and grimaced, “Why'd you have to forget the damn sugar? Coffee tastes like crankcase oil.”
“So what're you gonna do for money?”
“You keep talkin, I'll be happy to leave tomorra.”
“So let me get this right...you wanna stay so we can fuck, but you won't tell me anything about what's goin on back home.”
Ennis frowned at that, then sighed and looked at him, “Quit 'cause he wouldn't give me the time off...said I only been there six months, couldn't take two weeks off, nobody to fill in for me.”
“So what're you gonna do?”
“There's always some place needs help...don't worry me.”
“That's about the only good thing about workin for Lureen's old man, least I can get off a couple times a year...wish it was more.”
“So, we stayin a couple more days, or what?”
“Hell, yes, we're stayin...”
Jack got up and dropped his untouched plate of food to the ground, got to the other side of the fire, Ennis getting to his feet, ready...waiting.
“I ain't nearly done with you yet...”
Jack came at him so hard Ennis lost his balance and they went down, rolling in the dirt until Jack was on top.
Ennis said, “Ain't done doin what?”
Jack shoved hard against him, “Whatever you want me to do, darlin...”
