He has outsoared the shadow of our night; envy and calumny and hate and pain, and that unrest which men miscall delight, can touch him not and torture not again; from the contagion of the world's slow stain, he is secure.
Excuse me, I have a question.
Twist, right?
How'd you know that?
….......
Oh. Right.
So?
So what?
You said you had a question.
Yeah. Uh, can I go back?
Come again?
Can I go back? I'd like to go back.
No, you can't go back. What in God's green heaven made you think you could go back? Wait'll I tell the others!
It's not that funny. I'm new. I don't know everything.
You got that right.
So why can't I go back? I mean, I wasn't ready to come here. Whose idea was it, anyway? Not very bright.
Uh-huh...would you like to tell Him that yourself?
No...I mean, no I take that back...sorry. No disrespect intended.
Okay, we'll let that one go for now. So why do you think you should go back? Don't like it here?
Oh, it's real nice n'all. But I miss people. I left kinda sudden, y'know?
Yes. I do know. I arranged it.
You...arranged it?
Yes. And I apologize for that. But I had my reasons. Now, no more questions, I don't usually talk to newbies this much. You talk a lot, did you know that?
Yeah, I know. What reasons? It wasn't good, what I went through. I was in a lot of pain right before I got here. From what I remember, those guys that beat me...they liked it. That's what else I don't get. Look, I want to talk to somebody about this and you're all I got. I can't find nobody else.
Yes. All right. You do deserve to know what happened. You see, it wasn't what you did that got you here too early…but the ones who beat you, well…we're kind of in a race with satan, you know.
Satan? No, I don't know. What the hell are you talkin about?
We try not to say “hell” up here...
Will you please tell me what you're talking about!
Yes, well. As you probably know...or maybe you don't...your church life was pretty sketchy, as I recall...but anyway, we try to work with people, we really do. We'll take the odd sin here and there...long as it isn't hurtful. You know, a little drinking, a little pot now and then...what's the harm, we say. Whatever gets you through the night - I think John must around here somewhere…..anyway, we try to get the word out: Be kind to one another. Treat each other as you want to be treated. Give to those less fortunate. You know, things like that. We're well-known for those sentiments.
Yeah, yeah...but the guys who beat me....
Oh, yes. Well, we reasoned with them. We sent them wives, women who we thought could help them see the error of their ways. You see, we like the idea of free choice...I mean, we're not pushy. We say that harming another is a sin, we try to set an example. In this case, the women tried...I mean they really tried...they were believers of the Law. And we sent them children. What else could one want? But they always have the choice. These men made choices. They have to go to satan. Free choice: It raises quite the argument at the Wednesday night meetings.
What Law?
Oh, dear boy. Surely you remember that much. You know, Thou Shalt Not Kill? That law? There are others, all equally important...but in your case, this is the one we were concerned about. And those men…well, satan as much as said it to my face: “They're going to go with me.” Anarchist.
I thought it was Antichrist.
Anarchist, antichrist...they're both not good.
So...you lost to satan? How can that be?
Thank you, dear boy. That's the best laugh I've had in centuries. We lose to him all the time. But we're gaining on him...we're actually winning in some parts of the world...especially in California.
So why can't I go back? I have somebody…well, he probably misses me...it'll be a shock to him to hear...
Ennis, yes...we thought of that. He was unbelievably shaken by this. And I'm afraid that's another reason that you may not return. Your leaving taught him the most valuable thing he will ever know. It taught him love.
What? He didn't love me when I was with him?
Yes, yes, of course he did. You're not picking up on all this very quickly, are you? Might have to arrange to have a tutor come in the afternoons. He loved you. As much as he was able. Which, given his background, wasn't very much...but it was a lot for him, you see. He loved you, of course he did. You think it was easy getting away every six months? Quitting his jobs when he needed the money so badly? Putting up with Alma...bless her scrawny little heart...when he really wanted to be with you? You are what got him through.
But I can't go back?
No, sorry.
So how's he gonna get through it?
How? The way people have for thousands of years. He will grieve for the person he loved, he will mourn, he will move on.
Will he be happy? He won't sit around bein sad all the time, will he?
What is happy?
You know, enjoy life, get out, meet people...have fun.
Is that Ennis?
Uh, no, not really...he was pretty much a loner...'cept for me.
Right. He'll have a hard time of it, I won't lie to you. Do you want to know everything right now?
No...it's a lot to take in, I'll tell ya that. Maybe a little at a time.
That's how people usually like it.
And you're sure I can't go back?
I'm sure.
Can I at least see him? Let him know I made it up here okay?
Hey, we didn't do it for Houdini, we’re sure as h….we certainly can’t do it for you.
