He becomes aware.
Soft dawn light - rosy but cruel, insistent - seeps in around the sides of the drawn shade, demanding he rise…new day.
Sleep hadn’t come easy last night…he tried, hadn’t fought it…finally succumbed, using his now well-refined powers of remembrance to slip into the black abyss which, these days, he fears only occasionally.
He was rewarded, as usual, with dreams in which he would remain, had he the choice…Jack…
For the moment he refuses to acknowledge the day…continues to page through the pictures in his mind’s eye, focusing for a time on some most cherished before moving on to others still loved, but perhaps not as powerful…he loves them all…keeps all of them alive...and they, him.
He doesn’t feel the weariness that will undoubtedly claim him later in the day…doesn’t yet accept the despair that will settle on him, will suffocate him as if it were a living thing…soon he will finally decide - or his body will overrule his mind and decide for him – that he must follow the natural order of things and wake.
Now he chooses to remain in that soft, other world between sleep and waking…that place where he is in control of what he sees and hears…that place without which he would have nothing but sorrow…that place which holds him tenderly and shows him mercy.
He doesn’t yet feel his lack of sleep…he is not yet tired, and as he pushes through from that world to this, he is aware only that he’s been on a journey that has revived him, restored him, strengthened him to face what’s coming…another day.
And, knowing he can go back, he opens his eyes.
