dead of winter 2

“Lureen’s old man is in bad shape, wouldn’t surprise me he don’t last out the year. Then Lureen’ll take over, who knows what that’s gonna be like.”

“Maybe make you president. Do what you want…no boss tellin you when to show up, when to go home, when you can take a piss."

"Better bein the boss than..."

"You gonna be that guy now, Jack? You gotta get all dressed up every day? Wear a fancy sport coat and a tie? Kow-tow to a buncha rich fuckers?”

“Got used to it. Went to a stock show once...goddamn, those guys know how to have a good time. Nice hotel, eatin in the hotel rest’arant, even had room service.“

“Room service. Nice hotel. That what you want? Huh? I know what you want. I know......”

You know? What the hell do you know?”

“Know enough.”

“What the fuck does that mean?”

“Jack, hold on, I just meant…”

“Fuck you. I know what you meant. You think you know me? Let’s hear it. This should be good. Tell me what you know. What do I do when you’re not there? You know that? You know how I get through the nights? You don’t know shit…I wish you did know…wish I could tell you how bad it gets…I wish…fuck…I don’t know what I wish.”

“Jack.”

“Shut up…you don’t know shit.”

“Jack. I know...... “

“And I’m tellin you - you don’t! This is enough for you. Meetin up every six months, that’s enough for you. Well, it ain’t enough for me! Don’t you get it? I need more….I need more than that……more than…fuck it, just drop it.”

“Hold on, what….?”

“I said drop it.”

“C’mere, darlin..…. I said I know, cause it’s the same for me.”

No.

It’s not.

You write them so well the bitter-sweetness sets my teeth on edge. WTF, Jack, maybe Ennis DOES know!

They should've talked more.

Wonder where you're taking them in this one. (Just not down aisle #9, Okay? LOL!)

Another pitch-perfect one. One detail I love is when you have Jack saying "rest'arant". It would look off it was written the right way.

"You think you know me?"
The old, old mistake of believing one knows one's loved one. Nobody can *know* another. Love happens notwithstanding.
I feel Jack wanted every time together to be true; Ennis wanted every time together to be perfect, and so he tried to turn both their backs to the shadow of that happiness. The last-ditch optimism of desperate people, if you wish.
It may have been better if they had faced the darkness and fought it together. It may have meant an even earlier death, for both, even less time together, and deeper tragedy for more people. I don't feel like I can judge either way.
Great story, as your usual. Thank you.

I like the way you used the italics at the end. Nice touch.

This is definitely the first time I have ever seen the word "kow-tow" used in a fic!

hope i spelled kow-tow right! I didn't even think to check, that's just how it sounds to me.....

I had to use the italics to show that it was what Jack was thinking, but couldn't say out loud....hope it came across like that.

thanks Donna

thank you, Paula. It's harder to write them talking than it is to write them screwing!
