Decompose (diːkəmˈpəʊz)
vb
1. To break down…to be broken down physically and chemically….

grief1

When had it begun to break down...when was it known...acknowledged...that it was something that was never supposed to be.

It was never supposed to be.

So. then.

Why...

so hard? To break away?

The thinking was managed in short bursts of time.

Now work.

Now drink.

Now sleep.

Now...Jack.

The thoughts were reined in, never allowed their head, never permitted to roam outside the lines…not a conscious decision.

It just. Was.

But then.

Then. When it was forced upon him, he saw.

Outside the lines

Oh. The carved figure lacks a belly. Ennis doesn't in fact lack a belly, but he does lack contact with what happens there, both physically and metaphorically: watching Jack drive away is so painful that he throws up, and he honestly believes it's food poisoning. Digestion (of food, of events) is a process of decomposition: breaking molecules into smaller chunks that can be used to build something new, and foster life. I wish he had a better grasp of the process.
Thank you for another thoughtful story.

What an astute observer you are. Of the figure lacking a belly. Of the process of decomp, especially if it's to "build something new".

With such a title, I expected no comments on this, I'm so very glad you left your thoughts.

The topic is important and wrongly neglected. The story deserves the best comments!
