He knew Alma’d kill him for sure if he went fishing Thanksgiving…Jack probably couldn’t get away either, so better to make it for the end of October, weather still nice, wouldn’t freeze in that tent.
Not likely we’d freeze, no matter the time a year…not me and Jack…goddamn, he couldn’t wait.
Fingers shaking at the thought, the stamp ended up upside down and crooked, and he spelled Childress with three esses…but it would find its way all the same.
“Thought I’d get ya somethin for Christmas.”
“Ain’t for two months.” Ennis was uncomfortable accepting anything from Jack, whether a compliment or something more concrete.
“Well we ain’t exactly gonna be together in two months, now are we?”
“Anyway I didn’t get you nothin…”
“Don’t matter. It’s out in the truck…your present, I mean.”
Ennis still felt uneasy about the whole thing but he didn’t want anything to screw up this trip, he’d been too long without Jack to worry about some little thing like this…so he bought him something, so what?
“Well I ain’t leavin this tent just yet, we only been one round.”
“Fine by me…got any ideas for round two?
“Matter a fact I do.”
They took their time now…laying together…touching, telling, asking, giving, getting…it was dark by the time they had finally rediscovered all the secrets they kept hidden the rest of the year, secrets they would only share with each other, no matter who else they touched while they were apart.
They slept wrapped together, something neither did at home, and woke in cold dark, still not truly sated but being so near and able to touch, to kiss lovingly and without heat, for the moment, was enough.
“So you wanna know what I got ya?” Jack was excited to tell him and see his reaction, and didn’t wait for an answer.
“It’s a saddle…good one, too, wait’ll you see it…nothing fancy, but it’s nice.”
Ennis smiled at Jack’s obvious excitement, and tried to sound happy about it.
“Damn, Jack, you shouldn’ta done somethin like that…I bet it’s a beaut, can’t wait to see it.”
“Better for your horses, too…you know they say the right saddle makes all the difference.”
“Yeah, I think I heard that somewhere.”
They were suddenly quiet…Jack rolled over on his back and stared up at nothing, Ennis lit a cigarette and passed it to him, then lit one for himself and took a long drag, blowing smoke out forcefully.
“I can’t.”
“I know.”

Date: 2012-10-11 04:47 pm (UTC)this. this, wow, I don't know what to say because I can only rely on how I feel when I read that sentence, but, the thought of finding and having someone to share secrets with ... it's making me think that it's possible to believe in love. I cannot imagine how it feels when your lover accepts you despite your secrets and despite the fact that you're sharing them with him (or her) - but somehow this sentence that you wrote makes me want to believe that it's possible to get there.
your writing is beautiful. thank you so much.

Date: 2012-10-12 12:55 am (UTC)There are things that I try very hard not to do: make Jack pathetic, make Ennis a monster, have them sob (I hate that!)...etc. I love them both, perhaps a tiny more sadness & affection for Jack, for obvious reasons, but as Jack said a few stories back "Ennis, there's dyin and dyin".
Thank you so much for your encouragement.

Date: 2012-10-12 01:00 am (UTC)And I'm glad that their secrets spoke to you and made you hopeful...I thoroughly believe it is possible to find such a love.
I had the whole thing written out with other wording and crossed out several phrases before settling on showing them as having something that no one else knows about, only the two of them, they know everything about each other and, as you say, are accepting of it all.
Have hope!
