Ennis offered to take Saturday shift for one of the guys; it was his anniversary and his old lady’d bitched him out pretty good until he’d finally asked if anybody could cover for him.
There wasn’t much to Saturday work, hardly anybody around, mostly weekend riders who liked to have a cowboy around so they could show off their nice horses and expensive tack...most didn’t know the guys at the ranch couldn’t care less what they thought they had.
He got there at six, figured he could be out by mid-afternoon...somebody else would muck out and feed, he had a few horses to exercise, either ride or turn them out in the arena, decided he'd do a little of both, then take his own horse out before he went home.
He ended up finishing later than he expected, it was four when he finished riding Merlin and put him up for the night, and stopped to watch one of the weekenders in the indoor arena…the guy was working his horse on a rein-back, his fancy boots and saddle still gleamed with new.
As Ennis watched, the man started to lose his temper with the horse, raising his voice and being rough with his hands and legs. It was a horse Ennis was familiar with, he had exercised him a few times, knew he reacted badly to the whip…also knew the horse’s temperament, disposition and willingness to please showed plainly that the whip wasn’t warranted.
He was about to say as much when the rider raised his hand high and laid the whip hard on the horse’s flank, resulting in the horse rearing and dumping the rider unceremoniously on his ass.
Ennis laughed inwardly at the sight of the guy in the dust, but out of concern for a good horse stepped in and offered to cool the horse down and put him up for the night, all the while itching to try that whip out on who Ennis saw as the one of the three of them with the smallest brain.
So he’d ended up working a full day anyway which was okay with him, and although he seldom gave the horses treats, he told himself to remember to add carrots to his grocery list for the week.
