He didn’t take the pills, choosing instead to ignore the pain...wasn’t the first time he’d got hurt at the ranch.
It was the first time at this age though, and it finally dawned on him that he couldn’t bounce back like he used to...this realization, along with the damn pain, made him pissed off and irritable and he had no one to talk to...no one to yell at...and that made him feel worse.
He’d hardly slept Wednesday night, he couldn’t even toss and turn since it hurt too bad, so he just lay there, miserable, trying not to think of every bad thing that had ever happened to him, but by two o’clock he figured he’d thought of nearly all of them...night has a way of doing that.
All day Thursday he moved from the hard straight-backed chair at the kitchen table, which made his back feel better in some ways, but where he was unable to sit for more than twenty minutes because it hurt his skinny ass, to the too-soft couch, which had no support at all and made his back feel worse.
Frank came by after work with a casserole his wife had made, and seeing Ennis bent over and kind of pathetic, apologized for yelling at him, it was just they had so much to do without trying to catch that damn mare, which made Ennis feel a little better and a little worse.
After Frank left, Ennis had a few spoonfuls of the casserole then put the lid back on, no appetite...he poured a glass of JD, enough to get him through till morning, but carried the bottle with him to bed just in case, so he wouldn’t have to get up...cause he sure didn’t want to have another night like last night...
