I think Ennis, in his simple way, was able to see it like that...not that he broke it down into components of love and life and broken hearts, but it came down to the same thing in his mind, I think...he was finally made, with the finding of the shirts, to realize what he'd had, what he'd lost, and I believe he is "better off", not exactly the right phrase but he knows he had something good and that, though he misses Jack, what they had together will get him through the lonliness...
