Since he decided to keep the dog, he’d been taking Chief to work with him, and the dog now slept at night on an old towel on the floor on Ennis’s side of the bed. His leg was almost healed, the bandage off, and his coat was starting to shine from being fed regularly.
Almost against his will, Ennis was starting to look forward to Chief’s company on the drive in and coming home, glad to have these little things to do...feed, wash his bowl, fill his water dish…it was a routine both morning and evening, and gave some purpose to his life at home. They both spent most of the time outside, Ennis working on the truck, or shoring up the trailer for winter, or any of the little chores he could find to keep himself busy...Chief would sleep on the sparse patch of grass by Ennis’s chair until it was time to go in.
Ennis thought that he might take him when he went to pick up Ben on Saturday...see how Junior and the kids liked Chief...especially since Junior might be asked to take care of him if Ennis was called away on a round up...although that was unlikely these days.
It was something he never thought he would miss...long, grueling hours in the saddle in sun, wind, rain, cold...eating twice a day if he was lucky...staying alert, always looking for a straggler, constantly circling trying to keep the herd together...eight hours of that and he, all the men, only had enough left in them to choke down some food before falling asleep early so they could do it again tomorrow.
But he did miss it…missed the sense of purpose it gave him, missed the responsibility, the camaraderie, the sharing of the misery with the others...it was what he knew...who he was...who they all were.
The younger men on the ranch did most of the roundups these days...but maybe if he mentioned it to Tim...
