He had stayed at Junior’s for a while after dinner when Meg asked him to help her write a letter to Santa, then went home, had a few shots of JD, woke up with a headache at four AM Friday.
Knowing it was in the thirties outside, the heat had been off all night so cold inside, too, instead of getting up to get aspirin and a glass of water, he burrowed deeper in the covers, pulling them over his head to keep the cold out...was just drifting off again, treading the waters of sleep, visions flashing in and out of view...Jack, the mountain, the tent, snow, sheep, his horse...when he heard a low whine…he left the mountain, but didn’t open his eyes as he waited for the sound to stop...
Suddenly he felt a blast of warm air on his face as Chief stood next to the bed and barked loudly….the dog had to go out.
Cursing, he enjoyed a few more seconds of warmth then got up, pulled on shirt, socks and jeans, and wondered for the hundredth time why he’d allowed another heartbeat into his house.
