Tuesday night Ennis took the list of questions home and read them again, trying
to come up with answers…solutions to take to Tim that would make sense for both
the guys who would work the roundup and the ranch manager…stayed up past
midnight, Chief snoring softly nearby, and by the time he got to work on
Wednesday morning, he thought he had a pretty good handle on it.

Sitting in Tim’s office he brought up the one question that only the foreman
could answer: where would the guests stay… the flyer called for a “bunkhouse”
which didn’t exist.

Tim replied that when the worst of the winter passed, there would be a large,
plain, one room structure built, enough to accommodate ten guys for the first
and last night of the roundup, the rest of the time they’d camp out with the
herd.

He then told Tim if there would be ten dudes, and they kept the herd under fifty,
they could manage with five cowboys, and call in some part-time ranch hands, no
need to hire full-time for a week. So, five with the dudes, two to stay and
oversee the part-timers to do the regular work...not everything would get done,
some work would fall behind, but they could keep it up ok for a week, and the
regulars would just have to make it up after.

After the part about the bunkhouse was settled and Tim agreed with the head
count, Ennis started going forward with one of the ideas he had come up with:
put together some questions for the dudes to answer, which would include if
they’d ever ridden a horse before. When they got the answers back, they'd figure
out which of the cowboys would do best with which of the dudes.

Ennis thought, but didn't say, that when the time came, he would request not to
be on a team with dudes that couldn't ride, and if they were all like that, maybe he
could be the cook.

Having a lot of chuckles with where this story's heading. Of course the romantic in me wants Ennis to be struck by cupid's arrow again over one of the dudes!

Good Man

Well, handling this in the manner Ennis did just shows the boss what a good guy he is and well, I think it will sit well with the other workers as well. A good leader and he did not even know it. Joe

Looks like Tim has a pretty good handle on things after all.

Oh, good. Now the next catch is going to be how many of the dudes are going to lie about having ridden a horse... (But if the sort of dude I was thinking about will indeed turn up, he may help Ennis some with the others)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

This dude thing could be disastrous for Ennis. At least he seems to be well-respected.
