Before he left for work he called Junior...she said Ben was okay, but Ennis could tell that she probably wasn’t doing so good.
Ben was getting frustrated with the cast and not being able to run around, and he’d spent a good twenty minutes last night throwing a tantrum, crying and yelling that his foot hurt and why wouldn’t Junior take the cast off...he’d also woken her up time after time during the night, asking for a glass of water or to be taken to the bathroom.
Ennis could hear the fatigue in her voice and promised to stop by after work and have a man-to-man talk with him...explain that even though he’d had an accident, that didn’t give him permission to raise his voice to his mother.
That was about all he could think of to say to Ben, he’d try to come up with more during the day...but he heard the relief in Junior’s voice...he’d do whatever he could to help her see this through.
Ben was a good kid, he was just having a rough time learning his very first life lesson - things don't always go as we want them to.
