Glad that Ennis did ask Junior about what to get Meg. I think I understand why she was hurt and disappointed then wanted to smile and cry. No matter how old we get, in our minds, we are still our parents' child... IMO, the little girl in Junior was thinking about how much more invested, more nuturing, more hands on Ennis is with Ben, her little boy. Junior knows her Daddy loves her-but the little girl in her probably (unconsciously) wondered if Ennis had wished that she had been born a boy- that maybe he wasn't there in her childhood as much because she wasn't a boy.
Asking about Meg let Junior know that Ennis' love is genderless
