She took the news better than she thought she would...smoked a few too many cigarettes, maybe...was quieter than usual...but no temper flared, no shouting, no harsh words.
Had she been waiting for it? Waiting for the announcement of the end of her marriage? Waiting for years? And then there it was, and she had nothing to do but sit back and listen.
Should she have reacted differently? With the conglomeration of thoughts racing through her mind, she could have come up with something...some scathing, hurtful words that would have brought a measure of pleasure to her soul as she watched them slam into him and fall to the ground around him, piling up higher and higher...as high as the wall he himself had built.
Maybe she should have cried…but that wasn’t in her, they both knew it. Crying never got you anywhere.
He hadn’t given her a reason...nothing he could point to and say “this is why I’m leaving you”...he even said it wasn’t her...nothing she had done, or not done...she listened very carefully as he tried to explain, and even though she recognized all the words, the sentences themselves were nonsensical.
She wasn’t prepared for his absence. He’d left so soon after saying the words...he should be in bed beside her right now...that’s where he’d been last night...she already felt cold and alone...this was a first for her...men, in fact most people, did not willingly part from her...someone once told her she had magnetism...a combination of confidence, beauty, strength, fragility, she had used it all her life to get what she wanted...what she needed.
What was she supposed to do? Try to get him back? Seemed unlikely. Another first. She had to move on...but right now, even though it never got you anywhere..........
