♥ Jack
Ennis went back to ranch work, hired on here and there, not getting much ahead but glad enough to be around stock again, free to drop things, quit if he had to, and go into the mountains at short notice.

Ennis pulled into the parking lot and saw he had arrived first.
He jumped out of the truck and walked around to stretch his legs...walked back to the trailer and told the horses they'd be out soon. He smoked a cigarette, got back in the truck to wait...thirty minutes later Jack pulled in.
The men got out to greet each other, their eyes caught and held but they shook hands since there were people around...Ennis told Jack to follow him up the mountain, there was a good spot about twenty minutes up.
It was a large flat area, the water more a stream than a river, but it would do.
Ennis went to Jack's truck and as he got out, turned him facing the truck and pushed him roughly up against it, one hand on Jack's shoulder, the other working at the zipper on his own jeans...leaning forward he said, “Been a long time.”
Jack bit back some harsh words and turned around, flipped Ennis's hat off, got his own zipper down, pushed Ennis to his knees, and said, more to himself than Ennis, “Too fuckin long.”

Date: 2011-05-30 02:57 pm (UTC)This one really makes me sad.
Sad they could only shake hands instead embracing, and mostly sad because Ennis just doesn't get it.
I think Jack has a lot of pent up anger and frustration.
You let us get a glimpse inside one of the many random "empty" encounters Jack has to "make do" with. Jack actually allowing himself to see what is missing from this relationship he can't 'quit.' Stealing affection, settling for crumbs, is he finally realizing he's entitled to more?
