“A dogggieeeee!”
Meg shrieked at the top of her little voice and went down the front steps as fast as she could, saying, “c’mere doggie, c’mere doggie” over and over, as Junior stood on the porch warning her to be careful and not to scare the dog, and Ben hung back next to his mother, not too sure what to think.
A horse was one thing – they were in rooms, and couldn’t run up to you and knock you down, and once he’d seen his friend knocked over when a big dog had jumped up on him, and his friend hit his head and there was blood and he cried and had stitches.
And dogs could bite you; horses didn’t bite you, at least not Granpop’s horses.
He watched as Meg kneeled down and hugged Chief around the neck, then as she sat back and patted his head, giggling uncontrollably as he sniffed her face and neck, his cold wet nose tickling...suddenly she lost her balance and toppled sideways in the grass, laughing and trying to curl away from him as Chief, thinking it was a game and still trying to get used to her scent, nuzzled her hair, sending her into more waves of laughter.
Ennis smiled down at the sight, and looked up to make sure Junior didn’t look worried, when he saw Ben with an unsure look...his smile faded and he pulled on the leash and told Meg maybe they should go inside.
Meg went running up the steps, telling her mother that she had petted the doggie and going into great detail, even though Junior had, of course, seen the whole thing. Ennis stopped at the bottom of the stairs and asked Ben if he wanted to come down and meet Chief, and he nodded, looked at his mom for the okay, and made his way down until he and the dog were face-to-face...Ennis crouched down, put his hand at the small of Ben’s back and told him it was okay...Ben ran his fingers through the thick soft hair on Chief’s neck, then hugged him and said almost in a whisper, “Hi Chief...I’m Ben.”
