Ennis went back to ranch work, hired on here and there, not getting much ahead but glad enough to be around stock again, free to drop things, quit if he had to, and go into the mountains at short notice.













They were sitting by the fire after supper, each with their own thoughts...comfortable silence...a familiar scene.

“We only got one more day.”

“Yeah.”

“I was thinkin...”

“Oh shit...”

“No...I was thinkin...those shows you go to...they ever come up here? To Wyoming?”

“No, not that far north.”

“How far north then?”

“Had one in Denver once...why?”

Silence for a time, then...

“How far's that from Rivert'n?”

“Three – four hundred miles.”

Silence...then...

“Well, hell, that ain't so damn far...”
