Ennis went back to ranch work, hired on here and there, not getting much ahead but glad enough to be around stock again, free to drop things, quit if he had to, and go into the mountains at short notice.
“You ever gonna tell me what's goin on? You know, that other guy?”
They had gone out early for breakfast, then to the stock show, then another restaurant for dinner, finally ending up at a bar before coming back late, both in a good mood...a mood for sex.
Jack had been aggressive in bed...almost as if he was trying to punish Michael for not being Ennis.
“Doesn't have anything to do with this.”
Michael said in his slow Texas drawl, “Well, now, it just might.”
He reached over Jack and took a cigarette from the pack on the nightstand, lit it, rolled over on his back and blew the smoke at the ceiling.
“Something musta happened or I wouldn't be here.”
He gave Jack a minute to answer, but nothing.
“He supposed to be here instead?”
Jack rolled over on his side facing Michael and took the cigarette from his fingers, took a long drag.
“What difference does it make?” The words floated out on a cloud of smoke. “Maybe he was supposed to be here...but he ain't here...you are.”
He moved his hand softly over Michael's stomach, up his chest, to the side of his face and trailed his fingers through his hair.
Jack had begun to feel a sort of tenderness towards Michael...he knew what it was like to be on the wanting side...and he didn't want to be the cause of the kind of pain that he, himself could hardly stand.
Ennis wasn't here now, but nothing had changed, not really...it wasn't like they had given up on each other...it was just another temporary fuck-up...Jack was used to them.
He kissed Michael and moved closer, “Look, I can't give you a lot...”
Oh, Christ!
That's exactly what Ennis would say...in fact, Ennis didn't even say it, he just acted out those very words “I can't give you a lot”...staying away, not making much effort, only able to give Jack barely enough to get by on.
“Look, Michael, I'm drunk, too drunk to talk about this now.” He kissed him again, “We had a good day today...a good night...you wanna talk about it tomorra, I guess we can...ain't much to say, though.”
Michael got out of bed and opened the bottle of whiskey they'd brought back with them, drank from it.
“Guess I better get as drunk as you are, then.”
And he thought, but didn't say, You are one cold sonofabitch, Jack Twist.
The next morning both men were quiet, kept to themselves, lost in their own thoughts...or maybe just ignoring each other.
They showered separately and dressed, left the room and as Jack got near the truck he said, “What the hell...I got a ticket for parking in the motel lot?”
Something was stuck under the windshield wiper on the driver's side.
Michael said, “Don't look like a ticket.”
As Jack got closer, even before he picked it up, he could see what it was.
He took it off the windshield and leaned heavily against the truck, sorrow and regret visible on his face, audible in his voice.
“Jesus Christ."
Then it faded to a whisper. "Ennis.”

Date: 2011-06-10 05:08 am (UTC)poor Michael- Jack should set him free- he's only using him when Michael cleary wants more
and Ennis- what did he write on this paper, is he still around, will he give them a real chance now that he's seen another man with Jack?????

Date: 2011-06-10 08:22 am (UTC)Two: once again, I find putting myself in Ennis' boots. One written word: Sorry. Allowing Jack the choice whether to dump him finally, or go after him. Taking upon himself to make Jack's choice, whatever it may be, his own.
To my knowledge, nobody ever covered the ground you are mapping so well. Thank you.

Date: 2011-06-10 05:03 pm (UTC)No note, just the map that Ennis used to find his way to Jack *sniff*
And yes, "I was here, I saw you"...I was going to put those exact words in an A/N on the next chapter...but I'm glad I don't need to.
Thanks so much.

Date: 2011-06-10 05:07 pm (UTC)you are so right, Ennis is jealous, and to see Jack with Michael...very hard for him.
