Ennis? "Coming" on to Jack?

Pass.

Come.

Don't come.

Big 6.

Big 8.

Hard way.

Shit, sounded more like a porno movie than a dice game.

He threw a twenty on the table, it landed in front of him across two spaces marked Big 6 and Big 8. A dealer, a pretty brunette with long red fingernails looked at it, not him, and said, “6 or 8?”

“6.”

The twenty quickly disappeared in a slot in the table, replaced by a red chip with the hotel's logo on it.

The stickman kept up a steady stream of chatter, encouraging bettors to lay their money down, as he used the stick to move the dice around in front of him.

“Get your bets down, comin out. C & E, field bets...yo eleven...hard ways are off. ”

Coming out?

He manipulated 8 dice and pushed them to the shooter, a young woman with long blonde hair, at the end of the table.

The woman picked out two dice and the rest were pulled out of the field of play by the dealer's stick. She shook the dice in her hand then threw them towards the end of the table.

“Two, craps, line away.”

The players around the table groaned as the dealer took all the bets that had been placed on the pass line, as well as the chip on the red 6, and stacked them neatly in front of her.

The stickman - his name tag said Jack, and below it, Wyoming - moved the dice back to the woman as the players put more money down...this time she carefully arranged the dice on the table in front of her so that a 6 and a 2 were showing, then picked them up and tossed them.

“Four, hard four...four is the point.”

The players started putting money all over the table, calling to the dealer for change, ordering drinks from the cruising cocktail waitress.

Jack tapped his stick in front of Ennis, “You playing?”

“Nope...don't know the rules.”

For the first time, he looked up at Ennis...held his gaze for a few seconds and said, “They give free lessons down here every morning.”

Ennis said, “Ok, thanks.”

He turned to walk away, then turned back again, “I'm from Wyoming.”

He left the table.

“Comin out roll...play those hardways, C&E, field bets...craps, eleven...we're comin out. All bets down, folks...dice are in the air.”

“Seven, seven a winner, pay the line.”

Tonight the positions of the dealers were switched, the woman from last night with the long red nails had the stick, Jack was a dealer on one side of her, taking losing bets from the table and paying out the winners.

The stickman pushed the dice back to the shooter, and he threw them, they landed at the far end.

“Ten, easy ten, ten's the point.”

Ennis threw a hundred dollar bill down, and looking at the table said, “Odds on 6, 8, 10, and five dollars each on hard 8 and 10.” He put his bet on the pass line, with the correct amount behind the line, for odds on the play.

Jack placed the bets on the table then looked at him and grinned, “Took the lesson, huh?”

The game went on for an hour, Ennis winning more than he lost. Finally Jack looked over at him, then pointed at his watch, and held up five fingers indicating he was going for a break in five minutes.

Ennis picked up his chips and made his way to the bar closest to the table, sat down, ordered a beer and looked back to make sure he'd understood that Jack would be joining him.

Jack sat down and ordered a Coke and they talked about the game.

“There's one thing they didn't teach us, though.” Ennis asked the bartender for a pen, then wrote his hotel and room number on a napkin and slid it over to Jack.

Jack looked down at the napkin, then back up and into Ennis's eyes and said, “Let me guess...you want me to tell you about the come.”

“Rather have you show me...”
