So I was a year off: I meant the previous stories in the series to be set in 1976...after the divorce...after Ennis is "free"...sorry.

And finally, I can post pics on LJ after the crash...
thanks for reading...comments/feedback? Please.

Bucking Mule Falls, Big Horn Mountains, WY.

August, '76

He rushed around trying to get everything together, his long legs eating up the small space...he rushed around like he'd been doing before every trip from the very beginning, even when he was with Alma (though then he tried to hide it...didn't know if he had)...even after all these years, he couldn't wait to get out, couldn't wait to get on the road, couldn't wait to get there.

After he had put some miles behind him, and as he looked ahead to the next two weeks, he remembered the dreams of the night before...one had interrupted his sleep, had caused him to wake in the dark with a sense of both hope and unease. The dream had been about spending more time together, maybe six times a year, and putting up a cabin.

But the real dream, Jack's dream, was of the good life...sweet life – he remembered that was how Jack put it...it was anything but easy for him to think about, but when he did, he couldn't stop from shutting down the idea in his own mind...although sometimes the thoughts barged in without asking permission...it pissed him off, and made him sad at the same time.

The second dream...well, the second dream was the kind that got him through the long, dry spells alone...the days and nights of '63...their friendship that had developed slowly, so slowly he hadn't even realized it was there, until Jack got him talking...got him thinking...got him feeling. Even the memories were like dreams.

But it had happened, and out of what was supposed to be a job so bad only two guys in Wyoming had even showed up for it, came something that he had never expected: a friendship, an alliance, a bond that had formed between them...and now he couldn't do without it.

And then there was the sex...

He put his foot down on the gas...he couldn't wait...because in his real life - that is, the time between Jack – his life was almost unendurably dull, routine...but then again, dull was all he was used to.

With Jack in his life, for the first time he had something to look forward to...something to anticipate with longing, not dread and apprehension.

As time and the miles ticked by...as he put distance between his harsh reality and drew closer to his fantasy, he felt the tension ease, his body felt more relaxed and he just kept thinking...I'm almost there, I'm almost there...

“Shit, August took it's damn sweet time getting here, huh? Worth it all now, though.” Jack leaned back and lit a cigarette, closed the lighter with a snap.

“Had a helluva time getting the trailer up these mountains...Big Horns...great idea.” There was no missing the sarcasm in Ennis's voice.

Jack looked over at him, ready to tell him to shut the hell up, tell him to plan the next one, tell him to fuck off.

But Ennis couldn't keep the smile off his face and Jack went to him, put his arm around him and pulled him close.

“You sonofabitch, you fuckin love it here.”

And Ennis, happier than he'd been since the last time he'd hauled the trailer up the mountains to see Jack, didn't disagree.

That was wonderful! Jack put the color in Ennis' dull life, didn't he? :)

Haven't been commenting as RL has me wiped (I'm working on a road crew!!! LOL!) I have been reading this series and it is up to your high standards. Not sure if the title for this one means the series in ended or just that they are finally together again up in the mountains. Always hoping Ennis decides to live the sweet life with Jack, but what makes your writing so good is that I can't tell where you will go with this.

Keep writing, please.

Susan

Hi Susan,
I read about your job on dcf, no wonder you're wiped out! Good to be working, though...
The series will go on until I can get over this...so might be a while...

thanks for your encouragement.

Man, if only you hadn't specified the year these pieces take place in. This one might've given me some hope. As it is, that line really gave me a pang.

I don't think there will be much "hope" in these, except maybe when I'm writing Jack...just what they might have had while they were together.

I can't give them August of '83.

I always think of the Wizard of Oz when I think of Riverton so dull and gray and just plain but when I think of the two of them coming together the mountains come alive with the beauty of the Sound of Music. I don't know why sappy as I am here but it always seems the hills are alive when Jack and Ennis come together. Thank you for this. Joe

I love sappy! But really, what you describe isn't sappy at all, it's exactly what we all want for them. I'm going through plenty of kleenex writing these, I'll tell you...
thanks, Joe.

Paula, thank you so much, I'm glad the emotion comes through, especially for Ennis, since you kind of have to read (and write) between the lines...we didn't get much in the ss or movie, but I like to think that he was so completely at ease with Jack that he was able to let his guard down and joke around, and be loving with him like he couldn't be with anyone else, ever.

Sweet story. Jack's the color in Ennis dull life. :)
I hope he'll be willing to take a risk, take a chance on a life with Jack. Great story!

Thanks...Ennis might take a chance in the mountains, but he would never consider doing it in his "real life".

Believe me, I wish it could be different, but as I said, I can't change the story...I'm just giving myself, and hopefully those who read, some solace that, yes, he did love Jack, and he gave as much as he could...they both did.
thanks so much.

p.s. I love your avatar - to me that pic is more Heath than Ennis.

It's a sad story, I know. At least they had some good times which I truly believe they did (within canon).

You're welcome.

Thanks. :)

Wonderful! I especially like the well captured language and I always like reading about the times they were granted to be together.

Thnx so much!

I've really enjoyed your writing, but I can't access your revised recent entries unless you "friend" me.
