This is about Ennis moving on. Ennis with a man other than Jack. Ennis in a loving relationship, but not with Jack…with someone else. He's learning to live with Jack's memory...and he loves another man.
Previously, on All Things Considered...
Ennis seemed to be moving forward...and Travis loved him so much that he would deal with these occasional bouts of sorrow, because Ennis always came back to him, and Ennis was what he needed.
Can you love two people? Love both because of their differences to each other...because of their similarities? Love both because each fills a separate and equal void in you?
All Things Considered, 34
The piaffe is an advanced dressage movement where the horse is in a highly collected and cadenced trot on the spot. The center of gravity of the horse should be towards the hind end, with the hindquarters slightly lowered. The front end of the horse is highly mobile, free, and light, with great flexion in the joints of the front legs, and the horse remains light in the hand. The horse should retain a clear and even rhythm, show great impulsion, and ideally should have a moment of suspension between the foot falls. As in all dressage, the horse should perform in a calm manner, and remain on the bit with a round back.

April 2000
“Mr. Del Mar!”
Megan Malone, fourteen years old and one of Ennis's best barrel-racing students, called to him across the yard outside the barn.
Ennis didn't insist that the kids he taught address him as “Mr.”, but he didn't discourage it, either. Megan was one of his favorites, though he tried not to have favorites. She was a smart rider, she listened, didn't think she knew more than her instructors did...and it paid off...she consistently placed in the top 3 every time she showed.
He stopped and waited as she ran up to him.
“What's up, Megan?” He expected her to beg him to let her ride Desert Storm, the new horse they had just brought in, a palomino quarter horse mare with a coat the color of dark honey, and a reputation for needing an advanced rider.
She stopped in front of him and caught her breath, “Can I talk to you about something?”
“Sure...but you know you're riding Moonshadow today, right? I'm not lettin anybody ride Storm just yet...maybe when she gets used to the routine and settles down a little...”
But Megan interrupted him, “No, it's not that, I love riding Moons.”
The girl seemed uncomfortable, she was looking around, down at her feet, anywhere but at Ennis.
“So what do you wanna talk about?”
“Well, I was thinking...” She talked as they walked towards the barn to get the horses tacked up for her practice. “I've been riding in rodeos for a while now...and I love it, I really do. But I saw a show on TV last week, about dressage...”
Shit, I'm gonna lose a good student and a good client. Fuckin' dressage...what's the big deal with it, anyway?
“Yeah...” He waited for her to continue, and when she was finished, he'd try to talk her out of it. She still had a lot she could learn from him, he saw the potential in her.
“I thought it looks like something I might like to do. I mean...I love training with you...but I thought I might give dressage a try.”
“Well, it's good to try new things...you think you'd like it better than barrel racin?”
Megan's face lit up and she looked at him and started talking a mile a minute, “It's just so elegant...and to be able to get a horse to do those things...did you ever see dressage, Mr. Del Mar? The different steps they do, they're called movements...and there's one called piaffe...my mom looked it up for me...the horse actually trots in place...you should see it.”
She was so excited as she tried to explain it to Ennis, and he recognized at once that she had a new passion, and he knew that he would not try to discourage her.
“No, can't say I've ever seen that, sounds pretty hard to do, make a horse trot in place. So you're gonna leave us, huh? Gonna go to some fancy show barn?” He smiled at her so she wouldn't feel bad that she was leaving.
But she looked at him and frowned, “No, sir, I'm not leaving. I'll still be here, I'll just be training with Miss Strait.”
Travis knew he didn't have long to tell Ennis that he had asked Deborah Strait to work at their ranch, he just hadn't found the right time to do it. It was the only decision about the ranch he had made without discussing it with Ennis first, and he had a damn good idea what his reaction would be. Deborah had always rubbed Ennis the wrong way, and it didn't help that Travis had gone out with her a few times, and she had let it be known that she was after him...not that it had done any good, Travis wasn't interested in anyone but Ennis.
And it hadn't been easy to get her to think about taking the job as riding instructor. He had told himself he would grovel and she damn near made him do it, had put him off for a couple of weeks while she thought about it. Today he had finally decided to force the issue and had driven to Thunder Canyon to confront her and get an answer.
He pulled in and parked the truck, and there she was, like she'd been waiting for him, even though
he hadn't called ahead of time. She was sitting astride her big gray, Chase, looking like a million dollars - even if he wasn't interested, she was still a gorgeous woman.
He got out of the truck and walked over to her as she looked down at him.
"Hello, Deborah, you look beautiful, as always."
"Travis. You here to plead your case some more?" She noticed that her heart started beating a little faster when she saw him.
She still had feelings for him. Even though it hadn't gotten much further than that first kiss, she felt the chemistry between them, remembered the heat of that kiss. Since he had called and offered her the job at Crazy J, all sorts of possibilities had taken shape in her mind.
Travis knew that Deborah was still attracted to him, might even still have feelings for him. He hadn't meant to hurt her, but it had come down to her or Ennis, and it just wasn't a choice.
He hated to use her feelings for him against her - it was in direct contrast to his nature - and he hoped it wouldn't come to that. But she would be an asset to the ranch and that would benefit Ennis, and Ennis came first.
He smiled and tried to keep it light, "Sure. Plead, grovel, whatever it takes. Have you thought any more about it?"
She had, in fact, decided to take the job, but she wanted to see how far he was prepared to go. She never knew what had happened to him the night that he'd left her so abruptly, but she figured if she was around him enough, he might just take a chance again.
She slid off Chase and they walked towards the barn, where she handed the reins to one of the grooms. "Patrick, can you please take care of Chase for me? Thanks."
She turned to Travis, "Let's go inside and talk about it."
They walked into the tack room and sat across from each other at a small table.
"So what's your final offer? Make it good so you don't have to beg." She smiled as she said it, and he knew.
"Well, we already talked about salary. And you can keep 4 horses there. Since you're showing so much we'll have to work out the weekend training schedule, but that shouldn't be a problem."
"I'm sure most of my students will follow me back to Crazy J, that's gotta be worth something. They'll board there and take lessons...I'm thinking a minimum of 12 will come with me."
"Do you want a flat fee? We can probably probably do that, I'll talk to Ennis."
Who's that?"
"Guess I didn't tell you very much, did I? Ennis Del Mar. He and I are partners in Crazy J."
"Oh, yeah, I remember him. Real cowboy.” Her tone was sarcastic. “Doesn't think too much of me, does he? And it goes both ways, he was pretty rude to me last time I saw him."
She reached over and traced a pattern on his hand with her finger, and turned those blue eyes on him.
"Why don't we have dinner and talk about it some more? Donovan's?"
He didn't pull his hand away, but he said, "Deborah, I don't think that's a good idea."
"Why not? Just dinner...just to talk about work."
She stood up and walked to the soda machine in the corner, so he could get a better look at what she was offering and what he seemed to be so casually tossing aside. The can of Coke came out with a clatter and she bent over to pick it up.
"Look, I'm through here for the day. Let me change and we'll just stop and have a quick drink and get everything settled. You know I want to work there, just a few little details to agree on, and I'll start next week."
Travis pulled up to the house and got out of the truck. As he walked into the kitchen he saw Ennis sitting at the table, but before he could say anything Ennis spoke up, voice sharp as a razor.
“Anything new around here you'd like to let me in on?”
