This is about Ennis moving on…Ennis with a man other than Jack…Ennis in a loving relationship, but not with Jack…with someone else. He's learning to live with his past...and he loves another man. Now he’s accepting that he can be happy with Travis, and still honor Jack’s memory.
Previously, on All Things Considered...
Travis couldn't remember a time in his life when he had been happier.
Ennis was a changed man. He would never let the memory of Jack go, but he was
able now to remember him and their time together in a way that didn't cripple
him as it once had.
"Deborah! What are you doing here? You know the..."
But she cut him off, "Ennis, Mariah's down, John already called the vet.”
Then she turned and ran back to the barn.
All Things Considered, 37
By the time Ennis got to Mariah’s stall, John had her on her feet and was trying to get her to walk. She was fighting him, pulling her head back, neck rigid, eyes wide and rolling, obviously in distress.
“She’s colicking, Ennis. Could be worse, but doc’s on his way.”
Ennis immediately took over, grabbed the lead rope from John and attempted to calm the horse down.
“When’d you call the vet, when’s he gonna be here?”
“’Bout 10 more minutes.”
Ennis eased up on the lead rope, gave the horse room to relax, spoke softly to her, and rubbed her neck…in a few minutes he was able to lead her out of the stall and started walking down the breezeway, getting her in a more open area so the vet would have room to work on her.
He called to John, “You take her signs? She have gut sounds?”
John walked quickly to catch up, “Yeah, she’s got gut sounds, temp’s ok, heart rate and respiration are both up a little, a course.”
Ennis had calmed down after seeing the horse; it wasn’t as bad as he knew it could have been. She was in distress, but not out of control with pain, something he’d seen more than once and didn’t care to see again, especially in Mariah.
Travis caught up to Ennis and John, “She gonna be ok?”
John spoke up, “Coulda been a lot worse, right, Ennis? Vet’ll have her taken care of in no time.”
As he spoke, the vet pulled up in his big van, which was outfitted with what amounted to a small emergency room.
Jesse Wells, the ranch’s vet for over a decade, got out and carried his bag over to Mariah.
“How’s she doin?”
Ennis said, “She settled down some…heard gut sounds, but she’s still kickin at her belly.”
Jesse had already filled a syringe and moved to Mariah’s side.
“Gonna give her some bute,” he said as he pushed the plunger, “then we’ll see if she needs mineral oil.”
He discarded the needle in a bag, then put his stethoscope on to listen for sounds in Mariah’s
stomach, moving from top to bottom on one side, then the other. Then he took her other vitals and turned to Ennis.
“She sounds good, and looks like the bute is helping. I’m gonna give her the oil anyway, just to make sure it there is an obstruction, even a small one, she can pass it.”
Thirty minutes later, Mariah was back in her stall and Jesse had packed up his truck and was washing his hands in the tack room.
“Good luck was with you today, Ennis…I think she’ll be ok. She starts showing symptoms again, you call me right away, hear?” He dried his hands, shook hands with Ennis and carefully backed his truck out.
Travis walked up to Ennis, “Glad she’ll be all right…you doin ok?”
“Yeah.”
They walked back to the house, neither one ever realizing that Deborah had disappeared.
