“Got a better idea, we get back in bed, I give ya another kinda fever.”
“Just got outta bed.”
“Hey, this has to last me through a long, hot summer...speakin a which, I think we should figure out the next trip now…before we leave…I was thinkin maybe September instead a August…not so hot.”
“That’s...March, April, May, June, July, August, September...seven months, I don’t wanna go that long…how bout June, then September?”
“How you gonna get that much time off?”
“I can prob’ly get off ten days in June, nothin much goin on…September might be a bitch, but somebody new bought Hi-Top…I get fired at Stoutamire’s, they’ll take me on.”
“No sense gettin fired, we can work somethin out.”
“Shit, wouldn’t be the first time.”
“What? When’d you get fired?”
“What the fuck, Jack. You been away from ranch life too long… you think I get paid vacations or somethin? You forget what it’s like.”
“Yeah. Guess that’s right…but shit, I didn’t think about you gettin fired…how many times that happen?”
“No sense talkin about it now…figure out where we’re goin in June.”
“I can’t make it in June and September…can’t get fired, but sure won’t make it easy to be home.”
“Well, let’s make sure everything’s nice for you at home. Don’t want you puttin yourself out.”
“Fuck you. Who drives fourteen hundred miles each way every time? Who drove fourteen hundred miles once and turned right around and went back? You do that?!”
“That was six years ago! You complainin about it now? You wanna know how many times I got fired? Twice. Two jobs I lost cause a this shit. Had to put up with listenin to fuckin Alma and her shit cause I was late with her money…”
“Well, why don’t we just fix it so you never get fired again? How ‘bout you come to Texas next time you wanna get fucked! Let’s try it that way for a while, see how that works for ya!”

Date: 2012-07-30 06:49 am (UTC)I had a discussion once on this comm about how in my parts of the world it would have been unthinkable, esp. in the '60 and '70, that an employee would take so much time off, and a husband and father would take so much time off *on his own*. It would have looked quite suspicious by itself, to say nothing of the fact that it would indeed ruin a man's reputation as a hard worker, something Ennis prizes very much. Yet he doesn't think twice about it.
This story sheds light on an often overlooked element in the OS. Thank you!
