“Jack, don’t forget we got that parent-teacher conference tonight, we have to be there at six o’clock.”
Lureen leaned close to the bathroom mirror to apply a thin coat of Avon’s About Town Pandora Pink lipstick, swiveled the stick down and snapped on the top before picking up her comb and lightly teasing her hair on top then smoothing it over so that what she considered a natural-looking pouf remained.
“Yeah, I remember. You gonna talk to em about his readin problem?”
“I told you, he doesn’t really have a reading problem, he’s just not a genius. But he’s fine. If there was anything wrong, don’t you think they’d send a note home?”
“Lureen, I think we oughta say somethin…maybe them teachers are too busy to notice.”
She turned to him, frown on her face, and snapped, “Well, why don’t you say something, he’s your son, too. And I am not gettin in a fight about this now, I got a million things to do today.”
“Well, so do I, I gotta get over to Ray Arnold’s place and try to close that deal on two combines and don’t even know if I can get him two when he needs em. “
He turned to face her and put his hands on her shoulders, then pushed at her long hair, carefully moving it back, away from her face, leaned in and kissed her.
“I don’t want to fight with you, Lureen. I’m just worried about him…I don’t it to be harder for him later on…don’t want him ridin bulls to make a livin.”
“You don’t have to worry about that happening, he is going to college…he’s gonna do something great.”
Her voice broke, and she backed a step away from Jack, tears stinging her eyes, threatening to fall, but she reined them in.
“He’s going to be a doctor, or a lawyer…or…or…he’ll save the whales…or something!”
She drew herself up to her full five foot four inch height and glared at Jack, “He’s going to make something of himself.”
Jack reached out and pulled her to him, hugged her close; they were both drowning in feelings neither understood; they were trying to raise a son with a purpose, when they didn’t even know what their own purpose was in life.
They stood that way for minutes, tied to each other for different reasons…Lureen relaxed into her husband, the man she missed too often…the one person who should be there for her, but often was not.
And as she leaned into him he bent and kissed her…kissed her like in the old days…and she responded like she had in the old days…
“Don’t forget we got that conference tonight, we have to be there at six.”
“Yeah. I remember.”
