“Alma, I told ya, you’re gonna have to get your mother or somebody to go with ya, I’m not gonna get home til late…those mares could foal any time now. Thought you’da learned by now, this ain’t no nine to five job.”
Alma gripped the phone, wishing it were Ennis’s neck that her fingers were closing around.
“Well, don’t put yourself out none for your children’s schoolin. God knows mares are more important than your own flesh and blood.”
Muscles clenched in Ennis’s jaw as he struggled to hold back language he knew she rarely heard any more.
“Like those checks every month, doncha?”
He had plenty more to say but heard only a dial tone. He clicked the button on the cordless phone, not nearly as satisfying as slamming down a real phone.
He opened a beer, tossed the top into the trash, and suddenly remembered that in the early years of their marriage, Alma would bring beers to him.
Looking out the window, seeing more of the reflection of his kitchen than anything else, he had memories of sitting on the couch, not even asking for a beer, but having it appear before him. She had taken care of a lot of his creature comforts.
He figured she knew something, just didn’t know what she knew, or how she knew it…so he pushed it aside with all the other things he knew and didn’t know. Even in the bedroom; he didn’t like to think about it, but sometimes he did. She’d never complained, but instinctively he knew she didn’t like it; but did she know anything? Did she know why he did it?
His mind drifted...one more month and he’d be leaving to see Jack – talk about creature comforts.
