Ennis leaned on the counter, his back to the sink, facing the little window to nowhere, sipped his coffee and mentally made a list of things he had to do today, which included, after work, picking up a ton of hay for his horses and bags of sweet feed for the barn horses, mailing a bill at the post office so the electric company wouldn’t shut off his power, and stopping at Junior’s, where he’d promised to look at a leaky faucet in her kitchen, since Kurt was still out on the rig.
It meant a long day but he welcomed it, knew he’d be tired by the time he got home…the dream last night had been a good one and he’d been dog-tired last night...seemed the dreams were always better when he was overtired…he slept so deep and he could see Jack’s face so clear...sometimes he’d see him like he was in ’63, sometimes he’d be older...snapshots of their time together...once in a while he’d be granted the reliving of a favorite day – or night...after dreams like this, when Jack seemed so close, he’d wake up feeling like in the old days...almost...
He turned and dumped his coffee into the sink, rinsed the cup and got ready for his long day that would take him into a better night.

October 11
Date: 2012-10-12 06:16 am (UTC)Well, I've been reading along, and thoroughly enjoy your posts. Hope you keep on going. Ennis lives with regrets every day, but can never go back except in dreams. Glad he does keep focused in his today, and has built a relationship with Junior after leaving her alone with Alma for so many years after that Thanksgiving. Wonder what his November 11 is like each year.
Thanks again.
Bud

That's Ennis's punishment, to have nothing left but his dreams, and he has no more control over them than he did over the choices he made while Jack was alive...
thanks
