“You kiddin? Prob’ly go deaf before summer’s over...why you had to bring that
thing I’ll never know...maybe that’s why we need so much whiskey up here.”
“Whiskey makes you talk...you know that?”
“No it don’t, never heard that before.”
“Maybe cause you only talk to me...I’m like that, y’know...between me and the
liquor can’t hardly get you to shut up...not that I mind...makes up for all the quiet
when you’re sober...here, finish it up...sheep’ll be okay, and it’s gettin cold out here...
you stayin?”
“Prob’ly fall outta the saddle...yeah, gettin cold...c’mon...don’t feel like talkin tonight...”
When he woke up, wrapped in the warmth of the blanket and his own body heat, relaxed and comforted by the welcome release and the glimpse of Jack, he couldn’t remember if the original day had been a Wednesday, but the dream was enough to get him over this hump day.
