They did end up talking…a little.
Ennis didn’t want to ask the usual “parent” questions: how’s school? Do you like your teacher?
He had really thought about it the night before, he had really thought about what he’d felt as a kid…what his interests were…what he did and didn’t want to talk about…and he ended up talking about what he knew, the ranch and horses, and asking Ben if he wanted to go riding one Saturday…and he was totally unprepared for the quiet excitement he saw in the little kid’s face…eyes getting big and round as the thought of riding a horse was planted in his little kid brain. He started stumbling over his words as questions tumbled out: how big were the horses and what color…could he ride by himself, and could they gallop…could they go this Saturday and if he liked it, could they go every Saturday…it was the most Ben had talked in a while, and the most excited Ennis had ever seen him.
The three of them made their way around to the half dozen houses, Ennis waiting at the curb while the kids went to the door, and the women who answered exclaimed that Meg was so pretty, and that Ben looked like he could ride and rope with the best of them…they collected their goodies and came running back to look in their bags and pull out the latest to show him.
He took them home and sat on the couch watching as they spread everything out on the floor, Junior letting them have one piece tonight and putting the rest up for later. Meg was talking a mile a minute, telling her mother all about their adventure, at the same time pulling at the tiara in her hair until it got wrapped around some strands and she couldn’t get it out, which made her cry, so Junior sat her on a chair, carefully working on getting it untangled, only pulling a little.
Ennis got up to use the bathroom, passing Ben’s room on the way, and stopped at the doorway to watch as he pulled a model horse out of his toy box and set it on his dresser…looked up and saw Ennis, and said, “Saturday?”
Driving home and thinking back over the night, it suddenly struck him how very lucky he was.
