The plan was to take it to work, have Tim fix up its leg and see if one of the other guys would take the dog home for their kids.

Except nobody wanted it, including Ennis, but it followed him around all day, limping a little, sleeping at his feet when he was working in one place, then jumping up to shadow him as he moved around the barn, even slept under the table near his feet while he ate lunch...and the dog didn’t want anything to do with anyone else...that’s when the other guys started in on him, making jokes and wisecracks, calling him Dr. Doolittle.

At six he got his lunchbox from the tack room and walked by the dog lying at the barn entrance, but as soon as Ennis opened his door it limped over and, after carefully judging distance and height, jumped up into the bed...Ennis resignedly slammed the tailgate up and drove home...first stopping at the feed store for dog food...only two cans, since he knew the dog was a stray, used to being on its own, and would soon tire of staying in one place.

Oh Ennis I think you will need to buy more food because you have this dog for a very long long time. Joe

"...tire of staying in one place"? Man, you're in for a surprise.

Btw, let me spend a word to recommend Dr. Dolittle: the original one in the books by Hugh Lofting, written as illustrated letters to his children from a trench in France during WW1. Nothing *at all* to do with any of the movie versions! That Dr. John Dolittle (only one "o") is a serious scientist, a man of action of understated, steely courage, a pacifist and an advocate of equality and collaboration among species.

I didn't know that, all I've seen of him is what's in the movies.....slash is very educational...
