Sunday was fine. He’d had another good day with the kid at the ranch yesterday...Ben was a little more relaxed around both the horses and Ennis, talking as they got Thumbtack ready, although he was still a little apprehensive about riding alone, so Ennis saddled Merlin and led Ben on Thumbtack around a short trail that surrounded the ranch, Ben asking questions once in a while, but mostly looking around and taking it all in.

After, they stopped at the diner again, maybe the start of a weekly tradition between the two, where Ben asked to order a chocolate malt while Ennis had coffee.

When he got home and saw the dog lying under the tree he was reminded of the dream he’d had last night, remembered the little dog that Jack had taken under his wing, and started calling the stray, who seemed to have found a home, Chief, that day.

The simple act of living and loving and having his grandson with him during the weekend and I like this little tradition he is building of riding and going to the diner a memory that will live in that young man for the rest of his life. Than to go home and find his companion waiting for him to comfort him even a little on those cold lonely nights. Joe
