Driving to work on Monday it seemed like all of a sudden his life was getting a little
better…he didn’t want to think about it too much, in case he was wrong, or it got
worse again, or something bad happened.

But he did think, for a minute, about the weekend, and how good it was to see
the kids with Chief...Ben had really warmed up to him and Chief turned out to be
one patient dog, letting Meg brush him – even his face – and wrap her skinny little
arms around him in a stranglehold; she played with his ears, even snuggled up against
him to watch TV, but soon he’d had his fill and just got up and walked away...no hard
feelings.

At the ranch, Ennis suggested that he and Ben ride Merlin together, and go a
little further out, on a trail with a creek, that Ben hadn’t seen yet, so they
rode out, the boy holding onto Ennis tight at first, then relaxing as he got
used to it.

When they went to the diner, Ben seemed relaxed and more at ease with Ennis,
talking more than usual, asking questions about the ranch and the horses and the
dog, and why Ennis had named him Chief.

Ennis hesitated just a little, smiled and said, “Well, that’s a real good story...knew
another dog named Chief long time ago...one day I’ll tell ya all about him.”

connecting with life

When we connect with life it makes things better. You can have two nickles in your pocket or a million dollars in your pocket and be miserable or happy. The happy is easiest when you have family or friends. But, when all you have is nothing in your life. It is miserable. I'm so happy he and his grandson are connecting in this special way. It will also give him someone to carry on his life in a way that we don't understand as we live but when we are gone it is good to have someone carry on our memory. Joe

He does seem to be coming around to seeing some good in life. Living in the past can be familiar and comfortable, but he has to start seeing what's around him now.

thank you

Reading all of these "Days." You're going a great job with pacing as you move Ennis along to a place of healing.

Thanks for this work; it's quite an undertaking to do one every day.

Hi Susan!

Good to see you here, or anywhere. Hope things are going well.

I'm glad you're enjoying his days. Like everybody else, it's mostly eat, sleep, work, with the ocassional fun time thrown in...and I do see him s-l-o-w-l-y moving from stranded in time to moving forward and seeing that he has things to live for...and the memories will always be there for him.

thanks,

So Ennis let slip that he may tell about *that* one day... I bet he's surprised himself =)

There's a lot more to the story than the first Chief, right?....maybe one day he'll be able to share it...maybe not...

Oh, that's great the way you brought the 2 Chiefs into this story.

I honestly had no idea this fic was 'about' that.

If it seems like I'm reading slow, it's because I'm reading all joetheone's comments!
