Happy Thanksgiving!
After the dream he had last night, he didn’t feel so bad about going to Junior’s and facing Alma; it was almost like Jack was here with him, almost like he’d been there in Ennis’s bed last night, and even though it was as if his presence remained, he was still sorely disappointed when he woke up alone again. He sat up and rubbed his face, remembered it was Thanksgiving and thought that he was grateful that he’d known Jack, loved him, still had these memories, these dreams, to get him through.
He was late leaving the ranch, didn’t get to Junior’s until almost four, and was ready for a little hassle from the women, hoped they hadn’t waited dinner for him. He knocked, then opened the door and was almost taken down by Meg and Ben as they rushed at him, hugging his legs and saying “you’re late” and “where’s Chief?” and “Mommy made pies”, as Ennis tried to keep his balance. He picked Meg up, ruffled Ben’s hair, said he knew he was late and he was sorry, Chief was home sleeping, and he couldn’t wait to try the pies.
He looked into the dining room where everyone else sat around the table, first at Junior to make sure she wasn’t pissed off, then at Alma, and was surprised to see a small smile cross her face as she watched him with the kids...he smiled back, kissed Meg then set her down and went to join his family at the table, suddenly very hungry.
