Seemed like Saturdays with Ben had turned into a regular thing, they had a routine now…pick him up at nine, the three of them would drive to the ranch where Chief would park himself at the wide doorway to the barn for the duration, Ben would stop to see Thumbtack and a couple others who had become favorites to pet, then run to the tack room and get the lead rope…he now knew how to unlatch the stall door, attach the lead rope and bring the horse outside, but couldn’t yet tie the knots, so while Ennis did that, he would run back for the bridle and saddle pad, the saddle was another thing Ennis would have to carry for now.

Ennis had shown him how to groom, so Ben would do any part of the horse within his reach, Ennis would finish up for him, then saddle Thumbtack and they’d either ride double around the ranch trails, or Ennis would lead Ben, while at the same time teaching him about being balanced in the saddle, and how to hold and handle the reins to get Thumbtack to turn or stop.

Every week included a stop at the diner where the two were starting to be seen as regulars, and the waitress always took them right to their favorite booth, brought coffee for Ennis and a root beer for Ben without being told, and left them with the menu, so far they had never ordered the same thing twice, but were gradually working their way down the list of lunch selections, today a hamburger hold the tomato for Ben, and a turkey and cheese sandwich with spicy mustard for Ennis.

I wonder whether Thumbtack will soon be going to lower his head for Ben to halter him for grooming. Horses are often so careful and kind with little children, it's a wonder to watch. (Then some of them won't care a damn, but on the whole they seem to be a minority).

I aagree, most horses have such kind and giving personalities, and those who don't may have had bad experiences with brainless humans.

I'm sorry, I still haven't finished your recent postings, but I'm still looking forward to and I will, I promise!

It goes so fast so Ennis you best enjoy this time because eventually when a little older won't be as much time with your grandson but this is a time when it is very important and I love how they are getting into a routine and being together. Joe

Hah! The beautiful Arabian horse I rode was ever so gracious with me. Thank God!
