Tuesday morning found Ennis and the other hands in the tack room drinking coffee
and discussing the decision made by the higher ups to have a dude ranch roundup
next spring.
Everyone had questions, most were dead set against it, calling it a sell-out, waste of
time when they should be doing real work.
David got up to start another pot of coffee, dumping the soggy filter in the
trash and punching the brew button, said they should get a list of complaints
and take it to Tim.
Ennis had been listening until now, but he spoke up, said maybe a list of
questions instead of complaints…maybe they had everything worked out and just
hadn’t passed down all the details.
The men agreed, Ennis went to Tim’s office for pen and pad, poured a cup of
fresh coffee, sat at the table and started writing his own first question,
reading as he wrote:
What do we do with green riders for 9 days?
He looked up to see everyone nodding agreement, then questions came faster than
he could write:
Where would they stay, there was no bunkhouse.
How many ranch hands would be on the roundup?
What happens to the ranch work for that week?
Would new people be hired?
The list got longer, the dissention more vocal. It was decided that Ennis would
take their questions to Tim and come back with answers.
