Ennis couldn’t just show up at Junior’s with a strange dog running loose, so Thursday afternoon he went to the feed store and bought a collar and leash...spent a minute looking at the ready-made dog beds, but quickly moved off, shaking his head.
The collar wasn’t much of a problem but Chief had his own ideas about that leash thing, planting his feet and digging in when Ennis tried to lead him, and while Ennis hadn’t trained dogs only horses, he would use the same method to teach him...slow, patient, show what was expected, let him get used to doing something new, repetition, praise...it worked with the horses and he knew it would work with Chief.
He also talked with Tim about the next roundup, told him he was up for it and ready to go and Tim said no problem, Ennis always made the first cut, he just didn’t know the exact date yet.
That made his day, he was surprised by how much he was already looking forward to it. By the end of the day he had made a little progress with Chief and the evil leash, and would work with him at home tonight and tomorrow, so that when Chief was introduced to the kids on Saturday, he wouldn’t scare the hell out of them...that would make it pretty hard to ask Junior to watch him.
