It had been a long week, he was glad to see the end of it.
He actually allowed himself to feel a certain amount of satisfaction thinking
about his questionnaire idea, and the fact that he had been one chosen to find
horses. You had to know what you were doing when buying a horse; horses for
sale could have any number of physical, and even temperament, problems that
could be concealed with medications by an unscrupulous seller. And he knew
what he was doing, would know a lot about a horse before he ever put foot in a stirrup.
But all that would come later. Tonight, he told Chief as they drove home, he
was going to celebrate the end of this long week. To most, his plan was a simple
one, but one not enjoyed by him very often. He would put two potatoes in the
oven to bake, take a long, hot shower, and then season up that big steak that
was in the fridge, but that he’d been too tired to cook on Wednesday or
Thursday. While it broiled, he would feed Chief, then pour a shot of the better
whiskey that Junior had gotten him for Christmas last year, and which he had
only tasted a few times.
He missed Jack, had been thinking about him a lot lately - and what else was new...
and while he didn’t intend to drink to excess tonight since he
was taking Ben riding tomorrow, he wanted to relax and feel that connection,
think back on the best times of his life, as he did so many nights...not with
sadness or regret, but happiness that he’d had them at all...and some of them were
pretty fucking hot...always a good place to start.
