He woke Saturday morning with an uneasy feeling, the dream crystal clear then suddenly gone...had it been about that last fight? Or maybe when he left Jack, only to walk away and puke, knowing...not knowing...mind and heart hurt...confused.

Thank God he had something to do today. Taking the kid to the ranch every week was acting like a tonic on him, giving him something to concentrate on, something he was good at, something he wanted to share...and he could see Ben changing before his eyes...he was totally at ease with Ennis now, and Ennis was more comfortable with him, a fact that made him realize how far he had strayed from his own family, and how he wanted to get it right.

Ben had also come a long way since the first time he’d gone to the ranch, learning and doing more every week, and he always took Thumbtack for a walk, just the two of them, so the horse could eat some grass...it was one of Ennis’s favorite things to see.

Even Junior had commented on the changes she saw in Ben. The kid was talking more, spending less time playing alone in his room...and all he wanted to talk about was horses and what he’d done at the ranch...Junior had already threatened Ennis with bodily harm if Ben asked for a horse for Christmas.
