dec 2

He woke sometime in the night, thoughts and covers twisted, mind and body cold.

Straightening the sheet, pulling the blanket up, retrieving the pillow from the floor, he knew what had caused the discord in his sleep...it was remembrances of that first night and all the nights after on the mountain.

He heard the owl in some tree outside his open window as he lay back down, had seen the full moon earlier...the sound was soothing, the full moon a piercing reminder...those things kept him in that place, their camp...sadness oddly mingling with comfort...after so many nights, months, years, he knew there was enough of both pain and solace to be had...he had learned, through long experience since Jack had died, that the two would sometimes blend and form an unlikely coalition that allowed him to at once pay his penance and revel in his relief.

Unable to sort out everything swirling in his mind the morning after, he had ridden the ridge on Brokeback alone, dark clouds low, thoughts the same.

He hadn’t known what to expect after that night but looking back on it now...in dark hours especially, mind loosened, opened with drink...he saw that Jack had taught him how to feel, how to touch, how to relax and let himself feel pleasure, and Ennis never shared that with anyone else.

He had been scared, but he'd felt more longing than fear, and so had gone to Jack and received comfort, tenderness, the things he thought were gone from his life forever - and so began his dreams.

And Jack had taken him, had shown him how to give, how to receive love, and in doing so had given up a part of himself to Ennis, a part that Ennis would never be able to return - and so began his nightmares.

He heard the owl again, just like he’d heard it, drunk though he was, on the night that had changed his life.

That sound was part of the ache, part of the tenderness, both conspiring tonight under that full moon, to bring the best of his memories to him...and the worst of the torment of missing Jack...

To feel this constant discourse in his life and his dreams is sad. It hurts knowing this is a never ending torture and pleasure for him. So much time wasted between those camping trips. If only society would have allowed him to love the way it was meant to be. Joe

Oh... this was so beautifully written...

Ugh... you've got it!
