Monday was dull, just the usual work to get done...but after the last few work days with news of the roundup and what that could mean, and the last few nights of dreams and nightmares, dull was okay with him.
He didn’t have any food in the house, only beer and ketchup, so he had to stop and pick up something, then changed his mind at the last minute, not in the mood to walk around a grocery store even if it was only for five minutes.
He pulled up in front of the diner, and put Chief in the bed of the pick-up, tied his leash to a hook that would give him room to walk around and lay down. Walking in, he asked for a booth, the waitress led him to one near the back and left him with a menu.
When he and Ben were here on Saturday, he’d noticed something on the dinner menu and figured he’d give it a try...Texas Chicken-Fried Steak. Jack mentioned it a time or two, but now he couldn’t remember if he said he liked it or not.
The waitress came back to take his order so he asked her about it, and was told that it was steak dipped in egg batter and flour with salt and pepper, then fried and served with a white peppery gravy...the dinner order came with two side dishes of his choice...Ennis picked mashed potatoes and green beans, and ordered a cup of coffee.
The steak, when she brought it, covered almost the entire plate, his potatoes and beans crammed around the monster entrée that Ennis knew he couldn’t finish if he hadn’t eaten for a week.
He looked up at her as if to say no way, and she laughed, told him not to worry, no charge for a doggie bag.
