So, he’d had chicken-fried steak...probably might not do that again...leastways not at the diner. He thought it could be good, also thought he could do a better job.
And that got him to thinking that maybe he’d ask Junior if Ben could come over some day...too cold now, but he could grill chicken legs on the barbecue for the two of them, and Ennis made a mean homemade barbecue sauce...something to think about for the spring...trying to get closer to the kids...it was working out naturally with Ben and his love of horses...he wondered what Meg would like.
He did have for an affinity for the boy, though...made him happy to watch him come out of his shell a little at a time, wished he’d had somebody there when he was a boy...but since he didn’t, it was on his mind more and more to make it easier on the kid.
Ben had Kurt, but roughneck work wasn’t regular, sometimes he was gone for days, even a week at a time, and did a lot of sleeping when he did get home. Nothing wrong with that, guy had to make a living...still left the little guy with a lot of time with only the females around, and they weren’t interested in talking about horses and playing with his toys, and he wasn’t interested in Meg’s toys...probably why he spent so much time on his own...until lately, that is.
Suddenly he had an idea for what to do this weekend with both kids instead of going to the ranch – after Gunsmoke was over he'd call Junior to see what she thought.
