Wednesday brought one of Ennis’s favorite jobs of all on the ranch...sometimes it crossed his mind that Tim would assign jobs like this when he knew Ennis needed it most, but rationally he knew it was just the luck of the draw.

He would spend the day riding fence, looking for and making note of any rotting fence posts or sagging wire that needed to be replaced, he and Merlin free to roam the miles of land...free to roam, as long as they didn’t drift too far from the fence line...as long as they stayed within its confines.

But the further away he got, the more isolated and safe, and therefore content, he felt, he allowed his thoughts to jump the fence and take him where they would...today, the dried-wheat color of the hills...perfect glass-blue of the sky, the chill and very feel of the air, allowed him to almost...almost...hear the off-key notes of that long-ago harmonica...if wishing could have made it so, the bright December sky would have turned dark, and the notes rained down around him.

I like the idea of Ennis' thoughts "jumping the fence".

There is a Taoist saying: get concave, and you'll be filled. The emptiest moments often have a way of ending up being the fullest. Beautiful chapter, thank you.

To think on those magic notes no matter how out of tune they might have been but knowing the man who made that music for him and music is a sign of joy and happiness even when a sad song because it heals us and makes us whole. So thinking on this riding along the fence on a good horse who knows you is pure bliss. Joe
