A Rider on a Rearing Horse Trampling on a Fallen Foe

Ennis didn’t want Ben to miss a Saturday at the ranch even though he had to work, so he stopped by and picked him up on the way, now wished he hadn’t.
It was a freak accident, and it had happened so fast no one could have stopped it, but he would feel the responsibility and guilt for as long as he lived, and this day would be among the worst in his life.
Ben had been leading Thumbtack back to the barn after a walk when a weekend rider passed them and, inexplicably, used his whip causing his horse to rear and back up, scaring Thumbtack who shied to his left, stepping on Ben’s foot and knocking him to the ground before running off.
Ben screamed in pain and called for Ennis, who came running from the other end of the barn, face drained of blood, picked the boy up in his arms and carried him as gently as he could to the tack room and laid him on the old couch, all the while talking to him in a low, soothing voice, so he could assess his injuries.
He’d have a big knot on the back of his head, Ennis could already feel it, but it was his foot that concerned him more. Ben was crying uncontrollably, and screamed outright when Ennis moved his hand to touch the foot...but he had to get his sneaker off - goddamn it, why didn’t I make him wear boots? – before it started to swell.
Forcing himself to remain calm, forcing his voice to remain steady, he said, “It’s gonna be okay, Ben…I know it hurts, but I’ll fix it, okay?”
The little kid was scared and in more pain than he’d ever felt, and Ennis’s words didn’t register, he continued to cry...carefully Ennis pulled at the shoestrings on Ben’s left sneaker, eliciting a wail, and cries of “No no no no no...”, but he got the shoe off then the sock, and moved his hands to rub Ben’s head soothingly, smoothing his hair, trying to make the pain leave both of them alone. The boy’s foot was already discoloring and Ennis knew he had to leave right now and take him to the hospital.
“Junior? Ben’s okay, but...” He held the phone away from his ear.
“Shhhh...let me tell you. He is okay.” The relief he felt that Ben's injuries weren't worse did nothing to diminish his guilt.
He waited for a minute while she got it out, took a deep breath and as calmly as he could, told her that her little boy had a broken foot.

Date: 2012-12-08 09:25 pm (UTC)Ben is stepping out of cartoons and into the real world, which is sometimes dangerous, but so much more interesting!
What happened, and why? How can Ben learn to see what is going through a horse's head, and what they may do in a given situation? How can he find a way of his own to stay in control of himself in a crisis?
Junior grew up as a cowboy's daughter, she knew from the beginning what it means to be in a barn. I'm sure she'll work with Ennis to turn the accident into a precious learning and self-empowering experience for Ben.
And perhaps something can be done about those weekend riders being kept under better control. The management on that place is damn sloppy on technical matters.
