When Ennis brought Ben home after the accident, Junior could see that he was more upset than even she was. He kept saying he was sorry...he should have stayed with him...he should have made him wear boots...he shouldn’t have left him alone with the horse...until Junior shoved a beer in his hand so he would shut up, asked him to keep Meg in the living room, and she took Ben to his bedroom so she could see his injuries for herself, and to settle him in bed. He’d been given a sedative at the hospital and was still groggy, couldn’t keep his eyes open.

She put him on the bed and switched on the cowboy light next to his bed. Then she got him undressed and into his pajamas...felt the back of his head and the large lump that was there, looked closely at the unwieldy cast on his little foot...then carefully placed him under the covers and laid down next to him before the tears started to fall.

She knew he would be okay, knew that these things were bound to happen if you were around an animal that weighed twelve hundred pounds, knew it was only a broken foot and thank God it wasn’t any worse and that kids healed quickly...she knew all this and later she would talk to him and make sure he wasn’t scared, make sure he understood that it was an accident and that the horse didn’t do it on purpose, tell him all the things to be careful of when he was at the ranch and around horses...she would explain it all to him logically so he would understand and wouldn’t be afraid, she didn’t want that.

But it was his first bad accident, and he was her baby, and she hadn’t been there, hadn’t been able to keep him safe...later she would be logical about it, but right now she was going to be sad for all those things that make mothers cry.

Yeah, they'll get through it...but moms worry. It will be a good learning experience for the kid, though.

No matter how old your loved ones get they are always your babies and you will fear for them to hurt and pray they never hurt in their lives. So yes it is good to be logical but it is also normal to have this fear. Thank god it was only his foot and hopefully he won't be afraid the horse will know he is afraid and to be honest the horse probably feels as badly as he does. Joe

Oh, Junior is a fantastic woman, her father's spitting image but without the trauma, and with the mental flexibility of Alma. This is a learning experience for her too... (*hugs them all, plus you*)
