“Granpop called, he’s gonna bring the tree over later and we can all decorate it, ok?”
“How’s Ben gonna help he can’t stand up.”
“He can pick out the ornaments to put on. How’s your foot? Does it still hurt?”
“It hurts and this thing is heavy, can we take it off now?”
“Not yet, sweetie, the cast has to keep your foot from moving around...I know it’s heavy, try to keep your leg still. Let’s go through the Christmas decorations, so when the tree gets here, we’re all ready.”
Ennis finished his coffee and washed the cup out. He had called Junior to check on Ben and once he found out that he’d slept through the night and he ate his usual breakfast, he relaxed a little, although he did apologize again about the accident. His daughter told him it wasn’t anybody’s fault and that if he really wanted to help, he could teach Ben how to use his crutches, which wasn’t exactly what Ennis had in mind, since he’d never used crutches and couldn’t picture the little kid walking with them, but he said he would try.
He was determined to make today happy for the kids...he’d bring the tree over and put the lights on it, spend time with Meg so she didn’t feel left out, since Ben was bound to get lots of attention, and give Junior a hand with whatever she needed. He felt bad about the accident, but after a lot of thinking came to the conclusion that him feeling guilty wouldn’t help anything, and that it wasn’t about him...it was about his family.
